Couples and Family Therapy

As a relationship therapist, I aim to create a space where people can think more clearly, feel more understood, and begin to relate to themselves and each other in new ways.

This approach helps couples and families move from disconnection toward more open communication, deeper empathy, and a greater sense of authentic closeness.

I work with clients across all stages of their relationships—from dating and premarital decision-making to parenting, separation, and divorce. I also support families navigating both longstanding and emerging challenges, including past and present conflicts, life transitions, and concerns about a struggling family member.

Some areas I commonly address include:

  • Relationship conflict and communication difficulties

  • Blending cultural identities

  • Premarital counseling and relationship decision-making

  • Perinatal and postpartum transitions

  • Parenting challenges and family dynamics

  • Recovery from infidelity and rebuilding trust

  • Separation, divorce, and co-parenting

  • The impact of trauma and CPTSD on present-day relationships

  • Intimacy challenges, including those shaped by past abuse or sexual trauma

  • Neurodiversity (including ADHD and autism) in relationships

  • Addiction and its impact on partners and families

  • OCD, including relationship OCD (ROCD), and its effect on relationships

  • Nontraditional relationships, including consensual nonmonogamy

My Approach

My approach to therapy is grounded in attachment-based and psychodynamic frameworks, with close attention to how early relational experiences shape current emotional and relational patterns.

I have advanced training in couples and family therapy from the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, where I currently serve as a supervisor, instructor, and Executive Committee member in the FACTS division. I am also trained in divorce mediation through the Ackerman Institute for the Family.

I integrate evidence-based and insight-oriented modalities, including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based practices, and the Gottman Method for couples therapy.

  • “Having Carrie there, someone who knew us both and had witnessed the full picture, gave me the space to say what I needed and mean it. She held the room in a way that made it harder for my words to get dismissed or negotiated away. That kind of support and validation changed everything for me. I'd recommend Carrie to any couple at any stage. She brings warmth, honesty, and a rare ability to make sure both people are truly heard."

  • "Working with Carrie was one of the most grounding experiences I've had in therapy…What stood out immediately was that she never had an agenda for us… She just listened and helped us understand ourselves and each other more clearly.”

    — Former client

  • “Carrie helped me with challenges in my relationship with care for each individual and the couple as a whole. She was kind, generous, and patient while working through difficult feelings and complicated dynamics. She very much helped me understand myself and myself in a relational dynamic and working with her provided tools and insights that I'll take with me for healthier relationships throughout my life.”

    —Former Client

  • “I have known Carrie for over eight years. She is warm, smart, creative, collaborative, and an extremely talented therapist and couples therapist. She also is an excellent supervisor and teacher. If you are looking for a therapist or couples therapist, I highly recommend you work with Carrie.“

  • "Working with Carrie within IFS was a crucial first step to developing self-compassion and an understanding of my inner world. I came into therapy with very little experience of emotional attunement and receiving care from anyone in my life - including other professionals. IFS and Carrie's attunement helped me overcome initial blocks I had around shame and fear to trust someone to witness my internal experience. She helped reframe parts of myself that I found challenging and that negatively impacted my life and relationships by exploring why it made sense that I developed the protection I did and how I may be able to foster the same safety in a way that was more aligned with my values."
